Established in 1924, the Houston SPCA is the oldest and largest animal protection agency in the Gulf Coast area. The mission of the Houston SPCA is to promote commitment to and respect for all animals and to free them from suffering, abuse and exploitation. Our vision is that we will lead our community to appreciate the value of animals. Committed to all animals, the Houston SPCA provides quality, humane care to dogs and cats, rabbits and other small mammals, birds, horses, farm animals and more. Our shelter is the only one in the region that can provide temporary, humane care to big cats and other exotic animals like bears and chimpanzees before they are permanently placed in accredited sanctuaries or zoos.

ADMINISTRATIVE DESCRIPTION:The Houston SPCA provides more services than any other shelter, rescue or animal control organization in Houston, and many of our programs are unduplicated in the area. Although our services are focused on Houston and the surrounding areas, our reach extends across the state in times of disaster. Our programs and services include: sheltering; adoptions; foster care; lost and found e-bulletin board; humane education, including in-school activities and Critter Camp; cruelty investigations; Houston’s only 24-hour injured animal ambulance; spay/neuter of all adopted animals; free, temporary boarding for pets of people escaping domestic violence through the PetSafe program; pet training classes; disaster relief services; a pet loss support group facilitated by a licensed professional counselor; free cat and dog food for the pets of housebound seniors through aniMeals on Wheels; and pet therapy offered to nursing homes by Junior League of Houston volunteers. All programs and services of the Houston SPCA—excluding adoptions, relinquishments, pet-training classes and Critter Camp—are free of charge, and we are proud to report that we place 100% of our healthy animals into lifelong new homes.
